Firefighters staged a three hour rescue after this hungry horse tried to graze on grass beside a river bank in Ratingen, Germany, and fell in.

The dozy mare was trapped in soft mud until her rescuers managed to fit a harness around her and winch her free with the help of a tractor.

"The river was rising and the poor horse was sinking lower and lower into the mud so we were against the clock," explained one firefighter.

"She finally pulled herself free when she saw an enormous feed of hay we'd put onto the back of the trailer for her," they added.
