Astonished traffic cops found 19 Romanian immigrants crammed into a six-seater transit van when they stopped it for erratic driving in Chiemsee, Germany.
The passengers - nine children and nine adults - and the driver had travelled by road from their homeland and told police they were heading for France.
But all 19 were told they had to continue their journey by train after police confiscated the vehicle for scrapping.
"It had no brakes, no lights, no suspension and could have snapped in half because of rust at any moment," said a spokesman.
"People were rammed in like sardines, sitting on top of each other. On top of that there was a lot of luggage. The van was so overloaded it was dragging along the ground. I am surprised it had managed to get so far." he added.
