Kings Of The Castle

Thousands of people helped build the longest sand castle in the world in Ruegen, Germany at the weekend.

The castle which was 90 cm high and 27.5 km long is now destined for a place in the Guinness World Records. Ten thousand people were needed to build the massive sand construction.

The former record breaker was 26.38 km and had been built on Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, USA in 1991.

Constanze Patrunky from the Ruegen Tourism board said: "There was a great big party atmosphere. Everyone was celebrating - we broke the record. The jury had to go up in a helicopter to get a good overview of the castle and make sure it met all the requirements."

However, not everyone was happy.

Nature Protection Orgnaisation Nabu claimed: "This action has disturbed the local environment upsetting animals and plants that live here. It is so beautiful anyway - we don't need a sand castle competition to advertise the local area."
